On November 25, 2016, journalist Okke Ornstein was moved from the DIJ in Ancon to the Renacer Prison in Gamboa. He is facing a 20-month sentence for groundless charges of “criminal” libel.
Visitors are allowed to see Ornstein on certain days and times. So, if you’re in Panama, why not pay him a visit? He’d love to see some friendly faces—and visitors send a message: We care about bringing justice to his situation.
The photo you see here was taken on the grounds at Renacer, which overlook the Panama Canal.
Visiting Days & Hours
Saturdays and Sundays, 9am – 3pm
What to Bring
Ornstein is allowed to have reading and writing materials, fresh foods (he loves oranges and bananas!) and packaged foods (plastic only; nothing in glass or metal). Oh: He’s a big fan of chocolate. Any of these gifts would be most welcomed by him.
Directions from the Albrook Mall Area in Panama City
- Head towards Clayton, continue on and pass through Paraíso.
- Cross the Miraflores locks; continue til you reach the road to the Summit Zoo, where you’ll turn left.
- Pass the zoo (on your immediate right), and continue for a few miles. The prison will be on your left—the fencing and the line of visitors outside will be the obvious markers.
